The Different Phases of Drug Study in Clinical Research are:

  • Phase II clinical trials are highly structured studies which first evaluate the new drug’s effectiveness in treating the illness.
  • Phase III studies have larger patient populations that are used to gain further experience with the investigational drug and compare it to placebo or comparator drugs already on the market.
  • Phase IV studies are performed to compare similar drugs and to clarify certain side effects or effectiveness.

For scientific validation of a drug’s safety and effectiveness, all information gathered during each phase of these studies is analyzed by the sponsoring pharmaceutical company and the U. S. Food & Drug Administration.

All studies are also overseen by Institutional Review Boards, (IRB’s) to assure that research participants’ safety and rights are protected.
